Description: Rank : Patient Care Assistant II Office : Department of Pathology, Hong Kong Children’s Hospital (HKCH), Kowloon Central Cluster Pay : HK$8,944 – HK$11,178.5 per month (Please see Remarks 2) Key Responsibilities: Assist laboratory technologists in performing routine laboratory duties under supervision and according to clinical/laboratory procedure guidelines and work instructions: Specimen reception including sorting, labeling, registration of clinical specimens received and packaging specimens for dispatching, etc. (specimen may be infectious or radioactive). Need to operate simple equipment such as centrifuge, water-bath, dry bath, laboratory hood, biological safety cabinet, electronic balance, pre- and post- analytical system for sample handling under supervision of medical laboratory technicians or technologists. Prepare specimen bottles, reagents, cleaning agents, and sterile items for laboratory use. Routine laboratory work such as decontamination of contaminated equipment, instruments, apparatus and utensils, and cleaning of laboratory benches. Storage and filing of records and specimens, e.g. blood, urine, swab, body fluids, tissues and other patient specimens and safe disposal of clinical and chemical wastes. Perform stock-keeping duties and replenishment for medical consumables to ensure a smooth operation, e.g. stock taking and expiry date checking, etc. Perform manual handling works and collect materials/samples outside the department/hospital. Perform regular stock take of various types of reagent and consumables. Handle patient samples collected from other HA clinics or hospitals. Monitor working conditions and alarms of storage equipment, including but not limited to freezer and refrigerator. Record instrument data and ensure proper storage of samples and other goods. Provide continuous site support in medical equipment maintenance and record keeping, including routine maintenance and functional checking, periodical preventive maintenance check, and be responsible for equipment repair logistic procedure. Work with irritant, corrosive or inflammable chemicals including but not limited to formalin and alcohol. Answer telephone enquiries and other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor. Entry Requirements Completed F.5 / S.5 or equivalent; Completed structured departmental training; (See Remarks 2) Able to read and write Chinese and English, and speak fluent Cantonese. Preferred Attributes Passes in 5 subjects in HKCEE including English Language (Syllabus B) and Chinese Language and Mathematics; OR 5 subjects in HKDSE attaining the level specified below: Level 2 in English Language & Chinese Language & Mathematics; AND Level 2 in New Senior Secondary Subjects / “Attained” in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of 2 subjects under this category) / Grade E in other Language subjects. With working experience in clinical laboratory. Good knowledge in computer operation and PC applications including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other MS Office applications. Pleasant and mature with strong sense of responsibility. Able to work independently under pressure, with good interpersonal skills and communication skills. Remarks Appointment will be on contract part-time terms for a period up to 1 year . 5% of total basic salary as end-of-contract gratuity may be offered upon satisfactory completion of contract. Applicants who do not meet entry requirements (2), if find suitable, will be employed to undergo at least 6 months’ on the job training including the structured departmental training. During the training period, the staff will be appointed as Patient Care Assistant IIIA at a monthly salary of HK$7,479 to provide service and to receive the training. After the training period of at least 6 months and passing the end of training assessment on skills and performance, the staff will be appointed as Patient Care Assistant II at a monthly salary of HK$8,944. Employment may be terminated if the selected applicant cannot pass the assessment after training. The required number of working hours is 19.5 hours per week. The selected candidate may be required to perform 24-hour shift duty and to perform duties during typhoons, rainstorms and other emergencies. The selected candidate may be required to wear uniform, N-95 mask and personal protective equipment when discharging duties. May be required to work in another work location to meet service needs of the HA. The renewal / extension of appointment will be subject to service needs, availability of funding and job performance.
