Description: Position : Scientific Officer (Medical) Rank : Scientific Officer (Medical) Office : Division of Haematology & Blood Bank, Department of Pathology, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong West Cluster Pay HK$56,618 to HK$ 131,423 (HGPS point 25 to 44) per month including Monthly Allowance (See Remark 2) Key Responsibilities The Scientific Officer (Medical) shall be responsible to the Chief of Service (Pathology) and Division Head of Haematology, Queen Mary Hospital in performing the following duties: Primary Duties 1. Test development and research. 2. Quality assurance. 3. In-house training for technical staff and junior Medical and Health Officers. 4. Contribute to service provision and signing out of laboratory reports in some Specialties. Complementary and Supportive Duties 1. Participate in the management of laboratory. 2. Assess new equipment and technology which may be applied to HA. 3. Advise clinicians on appropriate tests to perform and interpretation of results. Requirements Either one of the following qualifications : 1. A Master’s degree in clinical science subject from a local university or equivalent. 2. A degree in an appropriate subject related to the sub-specialties in Pathology from a local university or equivalent and 2 years’ experience. Preferred Attributes 1. At least 5 years’ experience in the field of cytogenetics and genomics (e.g. conventional karyotyping, fluorescence in-situ hybridization, analysis of genomic data derived from massively parallel sequencing) 2. Experience in bioinformatics, including basic skills of working in a Linux environment, knowledge of genomic databases related to clinical applications. Skills in programming language (e.g. R, Python, Java or Perl) will be an advantage. 3. Experience in the application of phenotypic testing and genetic analysis to interrogate human diseases. 4. Liaison skills for clinical problems and analytical sciences. 5. Commitment to patient care in planning laboratory services. 6. Experience in laboratory accreditation. 7. Creativity. 8. Leadership. 9. Good interpersonal skills. Remarks For Serving HA Staff 1. Selected candidate will be offered either contract or fixed term appointment for up to 3 years depending on his / her existing employment terms. Serving contract employee will be offered contract employment with an up to 15% total basic salary (after deducting the contribution of Mandatory Provident Fund by Hospital Authority) as end-of-contract gratuity upon completion of contract with satisfactory performance. Serving permanent employee will be offered a fixed term appointment after which the employee may be reverted back to his / her former substantive rank. 2. The offer of salary and allowance (Cash Allowance, Fixed-flexi Allowance or Monthly Allowance) for serving employees upon changes in appointment will be determined based on the remuneration package / employment terms of the staff concerned and prevailing policies. For External Applicants 3. The selected candidate will be offered contract appointment up to 3 years. Up to 15% of total basic salary (after deducting the contribution of Mandatory Provident Fund by Hospital Authority) as end-of-contract gratuity may be offered upon completion of contract with satisfactory performance. 4. Retiring / retired HA staff who wish to continue working for HA after their normal retirement may also apply.
