Entry Requirements:

Applicants should have:

(a) a Hong Kong bachelor’s degree or above, or equivalent;
(b) met the language proficiency requirements of:-
(i) Level 5 or above in English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or Grade C or above in Use of English of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination, or equivalent; and
(ii) Level 3 or above in Chinese Language in the HKDSEE or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent [Note: ‘Grade C’ in Chinese Language in the HKCEE before 2007 is accepted administratively as comparable to ‘Level 3’ in Chinese Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth];
(c) at least five years of relevant work experience (experience of internship, freelance and voluntary work will not be considered); and
(d) sound knowledge of Chinese and English word processing.
Applicants will be required to sit and pass a written examination (please see General Notes (e) and (f) below). Please note that an invitation to the written examination does not imply that the applicant’s qualifications meet the requisite entry requirements.


(a) To translate Chinese into English and vice versa;

(b) To vet English / Chinese documents and translations;
(c) To undertake supervisory duties where necessary; and
(d) To perform other related duties as required.
[Note: The candidate appointed is required to work in an office of the Home Affairs Department or any of the District Offices as appropriate.]

Terms of Appointment:

The successful applicant will be appointed on non-civil service contract terms for a period of 12 months.

General Notes:

(a) Applicants must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.

If a disabled applicant meets the entry requirements, he/she will be invited to sit any written examination required under ‘Entry Requirements’ without being subject to any further shortlisting criteria. Applicants who have declared disabilities found suitable for appointment may be given an appropriate degree of preference over other applicants whose suitability for appointment is considered comparable to that of the former. (g) Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions/Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply but their qualifications will be subject to assessments on equivalence with the required entry qualifications. They should submit copies of their official transcripts and certificates by mail to the contact address.

Applications must be made on the form G.F. 340 (Rev. 3/2013), copies of which are obtainable from any Home Affairs Enquiry Centres of District Offices, Home Affairs Department or any Job Centres of the Employment Services Division, Labour Department. The completed application form, together with a detailed resume and a copy of each of relevant academic certificates, documentary proof of professional achievements and/or reference letters should reach the contact address not later than the closing date and time for applications. Please specify on the envelope ‘Application for the post of Contract Translator’. For postal applications, the postmark date on the envelope will be regarded as the date of application. Only applicants who have passed the above-mentioned written examination will be invited for an interview. Applicants eligible to sit the examination will normally receive an invitation within about ten weeks from the closing date for applications. Those who are not invited may assume that their applications are unsuccessful.
