The APAC News Editor is a vital role within the global Lloyd’s List editorial team, taking responsibility for the daily, market-shaping news agenda during the APAC working day.
While focussed on delivering APAC market insight for global consumption, the role requires global cooperation, working with our editors and reporters in all regions.
The APAC News Editor will balance the writing of essential, breaking news with responsibility to drive big insight stories considered ‘required reading’ by our global audience of shipping industry professionals.
Working in conjunction with our UK-headquartered news desk and other senior staff, the APAC News Editor will be responsible for producing the first draft of the Lloyd’s List Daily Briefing e-mail bulletin, in addition to working on a daily mix of insight, opinion and data items.
This role requires exceptional writing and editing skills, a broad knowledge of the maritime industry, the ability to direct, work across and bring together teams, and an unwavering commitment to quality journalism produced with integrity, authority and purpose.
Manage and oversee the writing and editing of Lloyd’s List’s daily news output from APAC, including the Lloyd’s List Daily Briefing and e-mail bulletins.
Work under direction of the APAC Editor, and with senior UK editorial staff, to evolve content strategy for APAC that reflects the needs of the global shipping industry and supports subscription growth.
Work with the APAC Editor to develop regular Chinese language output via existing WeChat and e-mail channels, as well as working with the wider product teams to consider new formats, such as special reports, podcasts, webinars, whitepapers and other content-based openings.
Work with the Sales, Marketing, Marketing Services and Customer Success teams to grow our audience and revenue in the APAC market.
Work with the APAC Editor to plan staff holidays, travel and attendance at industry events in APAC.
Organise and plan ahead, liaising with the editorial leadership team on daily and weekly plans.
Help plan editorial-led events and content, as required, and represent Lloyd’s List at events.
Desired skills and experience:
Educated to degree level or equivalent.
A strong English-language writer who thrives under pressure and a team player who can collaborate with reporters and editors across the globe.
Excellent news judgement and deep understanding of the demands of global business for news, insight and data; detailed knowledge/strong reporting experience of the shipping and/or related industries worldwide.
A keen eye for detail, grammar and accuracy, with excellent editing skills.
Self-motivated and organised, with proven people/team leadership and ability to motivate others, skilled in a fast-paced global news environment linking colleagues worldwide.
A demonstrated capacity to work quickly and accurately, to deadlines.
Contemporaneous understanding of defamation/libel/sub judice/contempt law. Understanding of shipping law an advantage.
An intellectually curious thinker, keen to understand the economics of trade and shipping and willing to engage with people from the industry.
Advanced digital skills and understanding of how to use digital tools to enhance reader experience and loyalty. Experience with creating charts and infographics as well as multi-media output, including video and audio, an advantage.
Experience with Content Management Systems and online production.
Second language, preferably a Chinese language
